Following on from my last blog, another thing I'm often asked to clarify is the distinction between executive coaching and leadership development; so here goes:
Executive coaching and leadership development are both approaches to professional development that are focused on enhancing leadership skills and performance, but they differ in their scope and approach.

Executive coaching is typically a one-to-one process that is tailored to the needs of a specific executive. The coach works closely with the executive to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for development, and then helps them to develop and implement a plan to improve their leadership skills and performance. The focus is on individual growth and development, and the coaching relationship is typically time-limited and focused on achieving specific goals.
Leadership development, on the other hand, is typically a broader and more comprehensive approach to developing leadership skills and abilities. My typical leadership development programs involve a range of activities, such as training programs, workshops, mentoring, and coaching, that are designed to enhance the leadership skills of a group of individuals within an organization. The focus is on building a strong leadership culture within the organisation and developing the leadership skills of multiple individuals.
While both approaches can be effective in enhancing leadership skills and performance, executive coaching is more individualised and focused on achieving specific outcomes for an individual, while leadership development is broader in scope and focused on building a strong leadership culture within an organisation.
The approach that is most appropriate will depend on the needs of the organisation and the goals of the individual(s) seeking development.
